Year 2024, Volume: 25 Issue: 47, 611 - 634, 31.07.2024

Abstract

Abstract

The study aims to examine the prominent news values, emotional tone and emotion type in the 491 news shared by DNA WhatsApp News on WhatsApp between July 1, 2023 and July 21, 2023, by using the content analysis method. In the research, positive, negative and neutral emotional connotations of the news were defined in the emotional tone classification, and prominent emotions such as anxiety, interest, fear, satisfaction, curiosity, anger and surprise were defined in the emotion type classification. According to the findings of the research, politics is the subject of the news at the highest rate, news values such as topicality, importance, interest level and interestingness are at the forefront, and the dominant emotional tone is neutral (70.5%) and negative (27.3%) and news with a positive tone remained at the level of 2.2%. The three most dominant emotion types identified in the news content are worry/anxiety, surprise and rage/anger. As a result of the study, it is evaluated that the use of emoji in the news on the DNA WhatsApp News channel is an important factor in determining the emotional tone and emotion type of the news and causes the news to be presented with a subjective evaluation.
