Houellebecq’in Soumission Romani Üzerine Psiko-Sosyolojik Bir Okuma
Abstract
Bu çalışmada, Michel Houellebecq’in Soumission adlı romanı Sigmund Freud, Émile Durkheim, Jean Baudrillard ve Max Weber’in kuramsal yaklaşımları ışığında incelenmektedir.

A Psychosociological Reading of Michel Houellebecq's Soumission
Abstract
This study examines Michel Houellebecq’s Soumission in the light of the theoretical approaches of Sigmund Freud, Émile Durkheim, Jean Baudrillard, and Max Weber. The primary aim of the research is to analyse the novel’s critique of Western civilisation through the concepts of the individual–civilisation conflict, anomie, the consumer society, and the disenchantment of the world. The novel is examined through a comparative analysis based on this theoretical framework. The findings indicate that, rather than constituting an anti-Islamic political fiction, the novel reveals the structural crisis of a postmodern Western society that has lost its capacity to produce meaning. Through the character of François, the study demonstrates that the individual is unable to overcome existential emptiness through consumption, sexuality, and individual freedom, while the anomic condition resulting from the disintegration of the family, religion, and shared values renders the individual more receptive to a new social order. Furthermore, the consumer goods and technological details depicted throughout the novel function, within the framework of Baudrillard’s theory of the consumer society, as markers of social status, making visible the individual's relationship with objects rather than with meaning. In conclusion, Soumission is interpreted not primarily as a narrative of political regime change, but as a comprehensive critique of civilisation, depicting the contemporary individual’s pragmatic inclination toward any social structure capable of restoring meaning and social cohesion.
