The Intertextual Relations in Güray Süngü's Short-Stories

Abstract

Intertextuality is defined as a kind of relations, dialogue or a form of communication developed among two or more texts. The background of the concept is based on Post-modernism and Deconstructivism and it is conceptualized by Julia Kristeva with reference to Mihail Bahtin’s notion of “dialogism”. The concept asserts that any text is not independent from the previous one and each text influences one another and that process continues in an infinite loop. Intertextuality maintains that the reader produces the meaning and therefore, his/her experience has a crucial role in the text reading/interpretation process. It focuses on the relationship between both writer and reader as well as between text and other texts. It handles a text with its past and future as a part of cultural context.

In this study, the intertextual relations in Güray Süngü’s four story books (Deli Gömleği, Hiçbir Şey Anlatmayan Hikâyelerin İkincisi, Köşe Başında Suret Bulan Tek Kişilik Aşk, Vicdan Sızlar) will be analyzed. In this context, their usage pattern and functions will be also scrutinized. The article has divided into five titles according to the tendency of the author who uses both explicit and implicit intertextual relations as well as the tecniques of citation, reference and allusion. Süngü assigns some certain functions to these intertextualities that she has formed with poems, other books and authors, other fields of art, tradition, irony and metafiction. Hence, she wants to establish a bond between Old and New. She also tries to create an organic connection between past and present by means of the literary texts and thus, tries to carry the cultural accumulation which is progressively proceeding. Besides, enriching the narration by attaching the auxiliary text to the main text, evoking the connotation world of the readers, arousing the aesthetic pleasure among them, establishing the frame and fiction of the story within the context of intertextuality and contributing to the character formation are the other prominent functions in Süngü’s texts.
