Dijital Dönüşümün Önemli Bir Parçası Olarak Ücretsiz Bilgisayar Destekli Çeviri Araçları: Özellikler ve Yenilikler

Abstract

Free Computer Assisted Translation Tools as an Important Part of Digital Transformation: Features and Innovations

Year 2023, Issue: Çeviribilim Özel Sayısı, 385 - 402, 25.02.2023

Abstract

Translation studies have undergone transformations in different aspects up to the present day. There are four turns: linguistic, cultural, sociological and digital. These turns are not disconnected but intertwined. The digital turn explains how technology has been incorporated into the translation process and tries to predict the future of translation. Today, there are many digital resources available to help translators, and there is one tool that unites most of them under one umbrella: computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. Three main factors have increased clients' preference for translators using CATs today. These are standardization, price and format. These factors can be explained as standardization of the translation process, special domain terminology and translation memory to avoid paying for terms and sentences that do not need to be retranslated, and preservation of the format of the document.
Paid CAT tools are sold in foreign currencies without a local pricing policy and therefore freelance translators cannot access them. On the other hand, free CAT tools, which offer the possibility to install plug-ins and continue to be developed on a donation basis, can also be used by translation companies and translators. This study aims to emphasize the features of these free CAT tools, evaluate their usage methods and discuss their efficiency. To this end, this study shows how translators and commissioners can make use of free CAT tools such as the web based Smartcat or the desktop software OmegaT and discuss their functions in a comparative manner. As a result, it is concluded that free tools, with their free machine translation service, customizability and wide range of features, have improved significantly compared to the past and can be used as an alternative to paid tools.
