Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of upper body muscles strength training on anthropometric measurements, oxygen uptake (VO2max), cardiac output (Q) and spirometric measurements in healtly obese women. 41 obese women (Age: 37.70±2.25 years, height: 158.64±5.59 cm, weight (BW): 83.12±11.56 kg, BMI (Body Mass Index): 33.01±4.32 kg/m²) were voluntarily participated to this study. The participants were divided into three groups. The first group (C) was control group. The second group (A) performed aerobic exercise on a constant bicycle and the third group (AS) performed strength training with dumbbell. The spirometer test, gas analisys, cardiac output and anthropometric measurements was made before and after training. For data analysis, SPSS 10.0 packet pragramme was used. The comparisons were made using one way ANOVA. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. The findings showed that there were statistically significant differences between in study groups and control group in the view point of anthropometric measurements and cardiopulmonary functions. While VO2max measurement and cardiac output measurement were not found statistically significant increase, R time that it is an endurance indicator was found significant increase advantage of A group. In addition, spirometric parameters such as FVC and MVV were a significant increase of AS group that they were trained strengt exercise in additional. Consequently, diet and aerobic training had positive effects in morphological stature and endurance capasity while aerobicstrength training had positive effects on accessory respiratory muscles and pulmonary functions. Aerobic-strength training also increased MVV and FVC in obese women between 35 and 40 years old. But VO2max and Q parameters were not significant increased by this methods
