Abstract
With the developing technology, social media, which we can easily access from the phones we use to the computers, increases its impact on our lives day by day. The reliability of the information accessed and shared by the increasing social media platforms and the increasing number of social media users has become debatable. In this direction, the aim of the study is to determine the level of trust of university students in the shares produced on social media platforms and their habits of confirming these shares. A total of 481 students, 177 women, and 304 men, studying at the Faculty of Sports Sciences constituted the sample of the research. In order to obtain data, the "Social Media Confirmation/Trust Scale" developed by Çömlekçi and Başol (2019) and the personal information form created by the researchers were used. Within the scope of data analysis, frequency and percentage analysis to determine the demographic characteristics of the data obtained through Google Form, kurtosis and skewness analysis to understand whether the scale scores show normal distribution, t-test to determine the relationship between two independent variables, three Anova test was used to find out the relationship between and more variables. When the results were examined, it was concluded that female participants had a higher habit of confirming the information they obtained from social media than male participants. As a result of the answers given by the participants, it was found that individuals who spend less time on social media daily have less confidence in social media. The most frequently used social media platform by the majority of the participants in the study is Instagram. It was concluded that the participants preferred social media platforms instead of internet news sites to be informed about the developments.
