Abstract

Almost five years after the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global crisis management, Future War and the Defence of Europe explores the European Union's readiness for emerging threats in an era of technological and geopolitical change. Published shortly after the pandemic, the book highlights the EU's structural weaknesses and the urgent need for recovery and innovation. Across nine chapters, it examines the risks of integrating emerging technologies, historical and technological constraints, and the EU's preparedness for future crises. Framed by two contrasting scenarios—defeat and victory in a hypothetical 2029 conflict—the book provides strategic insights and recommendations to bolster the EU's resilience against evolving challenges.
