Abstract
Purpose: Workshops, whose use is becoming more widespread, have been discovered and used frequently, especially by institutions that provide personal and corporate development services to companies. Although its use in the field of education has become increasingly widespread in recent years, the literature review has shown that scientific research on this subject is quite limited. This research aims to eliminate this deficiency in the literature to some extent, to offer suggestions on how to benefit from workshops as an educational environment that will support and strengthen formal education in design education, and to bring a different perspective to the teaching of design courses in the information age.
Literature Review/Background: Although workshops are used quite frequently in design education, it has been noticed that the publications on this subject are quite limited. Although the thesis named "On Workshop-Studio Parallelism in Architectural Design Education" can be considered the first of the detailed researches on this field in Turkey, the research is a survey study. The thesis titled "A Studio Method in Architecture Education: Design - Build Studio", on the other hand, does not directly focus on workshops, but is relevant in that it conveys the experience of a "design-build" workshop in detail. The large number of articles found generally only deal with the concepts of the workshops carried out. This research; It is believed that it will contribute to the field by analyzing the workshop processes in order to gain in-depth information.
Method: The research was designed as a case study from qualitative research models. Since a single unit of analysis is handled with multiple cases, one of the case study designs, the "multiple case-holistic design" formed the method of the research. Observation and semi-structured interview methods were used while creating the data set within the scope of the research. In the analysis of the data, a comparative thematic analysis was made between the cases by using "cross-case analysis".
Results: When the results regarding the suitability of the workshops for design education in the information age are examined, it has been found out that in both cases discussed within the scope of the research, they have experienced a working process in a democratic environment, process-oriented, where the creativity and motivation of the participants is high, and where they carry out experimental and interdisciplinary studies in cooperation and cooperation.
Conclusion: Due to the nature of the workshops, it has been seen that they are very useful in terms of providing the environments that will bring the features expected from the designers in the information age, and it has been concluded that it is important for them to find more space in design education.
