Objective: This study is a longitudinal research aiming to reveal the changes in nursing Students’ attitudes and beliefs towards sexual care after completing their undergraduate
nursing education.
Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a longitudinal prospective design with all students newly enrolled in a faculty of nursing in the 2018-2019 academic year. The survey forms were applied to all newly registered students (n=173) in the first week of the first semester (first time point), and the second form containing the same information was re-administered to the same students at the end of the fourth year (second time point).
Results: A total of 24.4% of students stated that they felt unprepared to offer sexual health care services upon graduation. In addition, 41.4% of students stated that the nursing curriculum was not sufficient to provide sexual care. The mean scores for sexual attitude and belief among nursing students in their first year demonstrated a decline in the fourth year, with a statistically notable difference between the two time points (p=0.008).
Conclusion: It was established that nursing education has a beneficial impact on students' sexual attitudes and beliefs. However, the incorporation of a sexual health course into the nursing curriculum proved to be even more effective.
