ONOPORDUM ANATOLICUM TOHUMLARININ ANTIOKSİDAN AKTİVİTELERİ

Year 2015, Issue: 41, 89 - 96, 01.12.2015

Abstract

Antioxidant Activities of Onopordum anatolicum seeds

Year 2015, Issue: 41, 89 - 96, 01.12.2015

Abstract

The genus Onopordum contained nineteen taxa in Turkey, which are traditionally used for medicinal purposes in Anatolia. Antioxidant activities of ethyl alcohol and water extracts from O. anatolicum seeds were investigated by different chemical assays including β-carotene/linoleic acid, DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power and metal chelating. Also, total phenolic and flavonoid content were determined for the extracts. Generally, ethyl alcohol extract showed significantly antioxidant activity (except for metal chelating) with high total phenolic content. However, the water extract had the strongest metal activity among these samples. This study suggested that O. anatolicum extracts could be considered as novel a source of natural antioxidants in food and pharmacological industries
