Adaptation of the Sixfold Self-Construal Scale to Turkish Culture

Abstract

Culture is one of the contexts that contribute to understanding and explaining human behavior. The concept of self-construal is used to explain the dimension of the self shaped by culture. These self- construal definitions cover different dimensions of the self. The dimensions of the self-construct are defined from the context of the individual's own self and relationships with his or her social environment. In order to understand the cultural contents of human behaviors, firstly, self-construal needs to be defined and measured within the framework of this definition. In this context, it is important to measure the self-construal in Turkish culture to include more comprehensive and collective features. The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability studies of the Six-fold Self-Construal Scale developed by Harb and Smith (2008) in a more comprehensive cultural context in its countries with collective culture. The participants of the research consisted of 330 students studying in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades undergraduate between the ages of 18-25. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to test the six-dimensions structure shown by the original scale in Turkish culture. The results of DFA showed that χ2/sd = 2.95, RMSEA = .07, CFI = .93, NNFI = .92 and SRMR = .05. In addition, the item-total correlation analysis made within the scope of the validity study. In the reliability study, Cronbach Alpha values ranged between α = .73 and α = .94 for six dimensions. To test the stability of the scale, the test-retest reliability coefficient calculated for each dimension of the scale was found between r = .70 and r = .82. The results obtained in the adaptation process of the Six-fold Self-construal Scale to Turkish culture showed that the scale is a valid and reliable instrument in Turkish culture. It can be used in psychology studies in which self-construal needs to be measured.

Altılı Benlik Kurgusu Ölçeği’nin Türk Kültürüne Uyarlanması

Abstract

İnsan davranışlarının anlaşılmasına ve açıklanmasına katkı sağlayan yapılardan biride kültürdür. Benliğin kültürden etkilenen boyutunu ifade etmek için benlik kurgusu kavramı kullanılmaktadır. Bu benlik kurgusu tanımlamaları benliğin farklı boyutlarını kapsamaktadır. Benlik kurgusunun boyutları bireyin kendi benliği ve sosyal çevresiyle kurduğu ilişkiler bağlamında tanımlanmaktadır. İnsan davranışlarının kültürel içeriklerinin anlaşılabilmesi için, öncelikli olarak benlik kurgusunun tanımlanmasına ve bu tanımlama çerçevesinde ölçülmesine ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu bağlamda Türk kültüründe benlik kurgusunun daha kapsamlı ve toplulukçu özellikleri içerecek şekilde ölçülmesi önem arz etmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Harb ve Smith (2008) tarafından toplulukçu kültüre sahip ülkelerinde içerisinde yer aldığı daha kapsamlı bir kültürel bağlamda geliştirilen Altılı Benlik Kurgusu Ölçeği’nin (6BKÖ) Türk kültüründe geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışmalarını yapmaktır. Araştırmanın katılımcılarını lisans eğitimine devam eden 18-25 yaş aralığındaki 1., 2., 3.ve 4. sınıfta öğrenim gören toplam 330 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Orijinal ölçeğin gösterdiği altı boyutlu yapıyı Türk kültüründe test etmek için Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA) kullanılmıştır. DFA sonuçlarına göre χ2/sd=2.95, RMSEA=.07, CFI=.93, NNFI=.92 ve SRMR=.05 olarak bulunmuştur. Ayrıca geçerlik çalışması kapsamında yapılan madde-toplam korelasyon analizi sonuçları elde edilmiştir. Ölçeğin güvenirlik çalışmasında elde edilen Cronbach Alfa değerlerinin altı boyut için α=.73 ile α=.94 aralığında yer aldığı görülmüştür. Ölçeğin kararlılığını test etmek için ölçeğin her boyutu için hesaplanan test-tekrar test güvenilirlik katsayısı r=.70 ile r=.82 aralığında bulunmuştur. 6BKÖ’nün Türk kültürüne uyarlama sürecinde elde edilen bulgular, ölçeğin Türk kültüründe geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu ölçme aracı benlik kurgusunun bireysel düzeyde ölçülmesini gerektiren psikoloji çalışmalarında kullanılabilir.
