1969 yılında Sivas’ta doğdu. İlk, orta ve lise eğitimini Sivas’ta tamamladı. Üniversite eğitimine Gazi Üniversitesi, Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi Tarih Bölümü’nde başladı. Aynı üniversitenin Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü’nde yüksek lisans eğitimini tamamladıktan sonra doktora eğitimini Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Yakınçağ Tarihi Anabilim Dalı’nda tamamladı. Çalışma alanı Kafkasya Tarihi olmakla birlikte Osmanlı-Rus İlişkileri, Osmanlı-Lehistan İlişkileri ve İktidarın Kendini Meşrulaştırma Yöntemleri gibi konulara da ilgi duymakta ve araştırmalar yapmaktadır. Doktora tezini hazırlarken araştırmalarda bulunmak ve Rusçasını geliştirmek amacıyla devlet bursu imkânıyla 2004-2005 eğitim öğretim yılında Moskova’da Puşkin Enstitüsü’nde bulunmuştur. 2007-2008 Öğretim yılında ise Kafkas-Rus Mücadelesinde Polonyalı Birliklerin Rolü isimli bir TÜBİTAK araştırma proje münasebetiyle yine devlet bursu ile Varşova Üniversitesi'nde bulunmuştur. 2006 yılından beri Ege Üniversitesi, Türk Dünyası Araştırmaları Enstitüsü’nde öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmaktadır.

He graduated from Selçuk University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Turkish Language and Literature in 1992. He completed his master's degree in 1994 and his doctorate in 1998 at Selçuk University Institute of Social Sciences. In 1993, he started to work as a research assistant at Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Turkish Language and Literature. In 1999, he was appointed as a faculty member at Balıkesir University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Turkish Language and Literature. In 2003, he became an Associate Professor and in 2008 he became a Professor. In 2017, he was appointed to Marmara University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is still working here.

I received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Middle East Technical University in 2008. I earned a MA degree in European Studies from Catholic University of Leuven in 2009. In 2010 I earned second MA degree in Advanced International studies from the Institut Européen des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Nice (France).In master programmes, I extensively worked on European secularization process and history of secularization in Turkey. I hold a PhD degree from Radboud University, Nijmegen (Catholic University of Nijmegen). My PhD thesis is entitled as “Secularization of Alevis in Turkey – An Extention of Steve Bruce’s Secularization Paradigm and Its Application to Alevi Communities in Turkey.” I have recently published the book in Turkish called "Secularization Theory".
