Author Guidelines

General Conditions

  • The publication process for candidate articles submitted to the SUREK Journal of Alevism-Bektasism and Cultural Studies is conducted entirely through the DergiPark online system provided by TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM.
  • Submitted manuscripts must be original, must not have been previously published elsewhere, and must not be currently under review in any other publication.
  • In accordance with our ethical and fair publication policy, an author may publish a maximum of one (1) article in the same journal within a single calendar year. This rule applies under all circumstances, regardless of whether the author is the corresponding author or a co-author. If an author's name appears on any article published in that year, a second article by them cannot be published in our journal within the same year.

Article Formatting Guidelines (Template)

  • Manuscripts must be prepared in MS Word format using our journal's Article Template.
  • Margins: A4 size, Top: 2 cm, Bottom: 2 cm, Right: 2 cm, and Left: 2.5 cm.
  • Font and Paragraph Structure: The main text should be written in Garamond font, 11-point size, single-spaced, and justified. First-line indentation (Tab) should not be used in paragraphs; a spacing of 6 pt should be left before and after each paragraph.
  • Articles—including the abstract, tables, figures, references, appendices, and extended summary—must be a minimum of 6,000 and a maximum of 12,000 words, and must not exceed a total of 25 pages.
  • Visual elements in the article (photographs, drawings, sketches, maps, graphs, etc.) should not be grouped under a generic "figure" heading; each must be presented under its own specific type name.
  • The primary title in the language of the study must be written in all capital letters, bold, 11-point font, and centered. The secondary title in the other language must be bold and centered, with only the initial letters capitalized.
  • Numbering should start from the "Introduction" heading and continue through the "Conclusion" heading using a decimal system (1., 2., 2.1., 2.1.1.) up to a maximum of 5 levels. Headings must be left-aligned, bold, 11-point font, with the first letter of each word capitalized. References, Appendices, and Extended Summary headings are not numbered.
  • Research articles are generally expected to include the following main sections in order: Introduction, Method, Findings, Discussion and Conclusion, References.
  • Text within Tables and Figures must be written in Garamond 9-10 point font and single-spaced.
  • Table numbers and titles must be placed above the table (e.g., Table 1. Table Title); Figure numbers and titles must be placed below the figure.
  • Vertical lines should not be used in tables; a simple design consisting of only three main horizontal lines should be preferred. “Note” or “Source” statements below the table/figure should be written in 9-point font.
  • Equations and formulas must be left-aligned and numbered in parentheses at the far right of the equation.

Citation and Referencing Rules
The referencing system of the articles submitted to the journal must comply with APA 7 (American Psychological Association 7th Edition) standards.

  • Direct Quotations: Quotations shorter than 40 words should be given within the text in quotation marks; quotations exceeding 40 words must be written as a separate block paragraph, indented 1.25 cm from both the left and right margins, in Garamond 11-point font.
  • Reference List Structure: Must be formatted using a hanging indent (1.25 cm); written in Garamond 11-point font, justified, with no line spacing between entries.

Abstract and Extended Summary

  • Abstract and Öz: In accordance with the directive, studies written in Turkish must include an English title, abstract, and keywords in the introductory section. The Turkish 'Öz' and English 'Abstract' must consist of 150-200 words and clearly cover the purpose, methodology, and conclusion of the study. Keywords consisting of at least three and at most five words must be added.
  • Extended Summary: To increase international visibility, it is mandatory to include an English "Extended Summary" at the end of candidate articles written in Turkish; and a Turkish "Genişletilmiş Özet" at the end of candidate articles written in English or other languages. The extended summary must consist of at least 400 words.

The following rules must be strictly observed when generating and uploading similarity reports:

  • The overall similarity rate of the final version of the article must not exceed 25%.
  • The similarity rate from any single source must not exceed 2%.
  • The report must be generated by excluding quotes and the bibliography (references), without applying any word count quota.
