İndeksten Arayüze: Teknolojik Eşikler ve Sinemanın Ontolojik Dönüşümü
Abstract

From Index to Interface: Technological Thresholds and the Ontological Transformation of Cinema
Abstract
From the first moving pictures to the digital format, cinema has undergone a long journey, and each of the technological changes has greatly affected its ontological status. The history of cinema should not be seen as an uninterrupted series of innovations but rather as a sequence of critical moments when the form, perception, and audience of the film were redefined. Among the technological innovations that have continued to shape the world of cinematography are the changes from two-dimensional to three-dimensional images, from monochrome to colored pictures, and from no sound to sound. It is easy to conclude that these transformations not only led to new ways of artistic expression but also changed the public's reception. Although cinema was still a new-born baby, the industry and the audience had to get accustomed to sound, color, animation, and visual tricks very soon; their complete acceptance was only a matter of time when the right industry infrastructures and production systems came into being. At first, the use of early special effects to computer-generated imagery was considered technically infeasible or commercially nonviable; however, it has now turned out to be a major milepost in the medium's historical development. Thus, technology has facilitated the acceptance of cinema as both a mass entertainment medium and an art form that is evolving with time. Using a historically informed approach, the life cycles of film technologies are traced, highlighting the instances of both ideational and material rupture. The main technique involves a thorough evaluation of the literature such as scholarly monographs, journal articles, and other studies that are being taken into account to a certain extent through the lens of media and technology. The analysis, however, excludes studies that have been focused solely on the specific areas of television, video games, or advertising technologies unless there are clear technological connections with cinema. The historical methodology that the article employs is meant to define, through the examination of technological paradigms, how these have modified the conceptual frameworks of cinema in different epochs of history.
