Artificial Intelligence and Artistic Co-Creation: Human-Al Collaboration in Contemporary Visual Art Practices in Turkey
Abstract
This study investigates AI driven visual artistic production in Türkiye as a socio technical system, examining the interplay among human artists, AI technologies, institutional frameworks, and cultural contexts. A qualitative case study approach was employed with twelve professional visual artists purposefully sampled. Data were collected through semi structured interviews, artifact portfolios, in studio observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed four interrelated themes: co creativity, feedback loops, adaptation, and global local interaction. Findings indicate that AI functions as a collaborative partner, enabling iterative human AI co creation while requiring cultural and institutional mediation. Artists adapt AI outputs to align with local aesthetics and exhibition requirements, negotiating global technological infrastructures within a Turkish context. This study contributes to socio technical theory, provides empirical evidence of AI integration in visual arts, and offers practical guidance for artists, institutions, and policymakers seeking to support culturally embedded AI creativity.
