This study deals with the novels „Ohne einander“ 1996 , by Martin Walser, and „Der Sommer, in dem Anna verschwunden war“, by Barbara Frischnmuth, focussing, in particular, on the approach taken in these two works to the topoi of family, marriage and sexuality. The way in which family members behave in the two novels is investigated, tohether with the problems arising from their behavior. Whereas Walser deprets in his novel atypically German family, Frischmuth takes a mixed marriage as the subject of her novel. This places the decadence of marriage as an institution in Germany and Austria, respectively, at the centre of the novels, which show individuals going through a process of progressive isolation and alienation
