Türk Gazetelerinde Ölüm İlanı Söylemi ve Edim bilimsel Yeterlik: Tür, Söz Eylemleri ve Kültürel Anlam

Abstract

Ölüm, güçlü duygular ve derin kültürel anlamlar barındıran evrensel bir olgudur. Türkiye’de bir bireyin vefatı saygıyla karşılanır ve bu saygının ifadesinde dil belirleyici bir rol oynar. Bu çalışma, iki büyük Türk gazetesinde yayımlanan 111 vefat ilanını tür çözümlemesi yöntemiyle inceleyerek bu metinlerin yapısal özelliklerini ve sosyokültürel işlevlerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Analiz sonucunda, vefat ilanlarının yalnızca bir ölüm duyurusu olmadığı; dini inançlar, kültürel değerler ve toplumsal aidiyetlerin iç içe geçtiği çok katmanlı bir söylem yapısı sunduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu yapı, örtmeceler, merhuma doğrudan hitap eden ifadeler ve toplumsal kimliği vurgulayan unsurların yer aldığı 12 iletişimsel hamle aracılığıyla gerçekleşmektedir. Özellikle İslami değerlerin etkisiyle dolaylı anlatımın ve örtmecelerin yaygın olduğu görülmektedir. Bulgular, bu söylemin güçlü sosyo-dini normlara dayandığını göstermektedir. Çalışma ayrıca, taziye gibi söz eylemlerinin kültürlerarası farklılıklarını anlamanın, İngilizce dil öğretiminde öğrenenlerin pragmatik farkındalığını geliştirmede önemli katkılar sağlayabileceğini vurgulamaktadır. Edimbilimsel anlamın kültüre özgü türsel uzlaşımlar aracılığıyla nasıl kurulduğunu gösteren bu çalışma, ritüelleşmiş söylem araştırmalarına katkı sunarken, dil eğitiminde kültürel olarak biçimlenen edimbilimsel normlara yönelik farkındalığın önemine de dikkat çekmektedir.

Obituary Discourse as Ritualized Pragmatic Action: A Genre-Based Analysis of Turkish Newspapers

Abstract

This study examines the generic structure and pragmatic functions of obituary announcements (OAs) published in two major Turkish newspapers, focusing on how linguistic form mediates culturally embedded practices of mourning and meaning making. Drawing on genre analysis, a corpus of 111 obituary texts was analyzed to identify recurrent moves and their sociopragmatic functions. The findings show that Turkish OAs extend beyond the reporting of death, functioning instead as ritualized communicative events through which religious beliefs, social values, and community affiliations are linguistically enacted. Twelve conventionalized moves were identified, including euphemistic death announcements, relational positioning through kinship and occupational references, and messages addressed to the deceased. These practices are shaped by Islamic socio-religious orientations, resulting in a preference for indirectness and formulaic expression in the realization of expressive and commissive acts. By demonstrating how pragmatic meaning is stabilized through culturally specific conventions within a recurrent genre, the study contributes to research on ritualized discourse and genre-based approaches to meaning-making at the interface of language and culture. By showing how pragmatic meaning is shaped by culturally specific genre conventions, the study contributes to research on ritualized discourse and highlights the importance of awareness of culturally situated pragmatic norms in language education.
