Abstract
As in many areas, the level of education of individuals is a dominant factor in media
use. The messages that are emitted through the mass media are analyzed in the interpretation process under the influence of the education that individuals have received. Since the most
used means in this context are television and newspaper, the choosing process of these media
makes the determining role of the level of education evident. The newspaper can not emit
messages by a fictional integration as wide as television and is contingent to the text. By
using the advantage of visuality, television can address all sections of the society easily. This
constitutes a distinction between newspaper and television usage in the context of the educational
level.
This study has been conducted to demonstrate this distinction on the sample of Konya
and is showing that the level of education is an important factor in media usage. The influence
of educational level on media usage is a positive one with newspapers while there is a negative
influence with television. Also the topics of reader interest do not show a meaningful
difference by level of education with newspapers, while all television programs of interest
show a meaningful difference. This indicates that television audience and newspaper audience
differ meaningfully from each other in means of level of education.
