REVIEW MISTAKES ON THE HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY DUE TO EARTH CHANGES: WHERE ARE ALAŞEHİR AND LÂDİK ?

Abstract

After an eartquake* (or a series of earthquakes) occured during a war led by Mithridates at Apameia, lakes overflooded the lands and the plains which had no lakes or rivers before and and rivers and springs flooded. Meanwhile several existing springs and rivers totally disappeared. The quake mentioned above occured at circa 50 BC. Another big earthquake happened in 54 AD. . The last known earthquake happened in 1509 AD ( Böcüzade, 2012;483; Ambraseys- Finkel, 2006: 30). The area in which Uluborlu, Eğirdir, Yalvaç and Şarkikaraağaç are situated was called Frigia Mi-nor. The Romans called Frigia Minor as Thema Thrakesia. Süleyman Şükrü called Frigia Minor as Friçyatü’s-sagîr. Historical texts called the Eğridir lake the Sea, and the plain between Gelendost and this Sea Kelbianos Plain. If we recall the geographical changes of the past, the Eğridir lake existed as two parts; namely Eğridir and Hoyran lakes. Two lakes joined in the beginning of the 17 th century AD and both the river and the bridge sunk into the water. Approximately 500 years earlier, certain changes of the earth around the Eğridir lake occured. Upon understanding this reality, new views cocerning our history appeared and will continue to do so. As mentioned above the change was not the first one. Also, there was a 16-17 km long river called el-Battal, Halys or Meander with a bridge over it. At the Kemer Pass, the Kings Road, mentioned by Heredotus, ran over this bridge. Alaşehir that is mentioned as Filadelfiya by Anna Komnena is Yalvaç. The reason that the words Yalvaç and Eğridir were not used, is that at the time they were called Alaşehir and Lâdik. This study concludes that Yalvaç was called Aleşehir, (Antióchette or Minor Antioche, Antakya), Eğ-ridir was called Lâdik (Laodikia, Akrokos), Lampe was called Senirkent (Karaarslan, Arslan, el-Leys, Pankaleia) and Kelbianos plain lay between Gelendost and the Eğridir lake. Yet we have been taught that Denizli was Lâdik, Manisa Alaşehir was Philadelphia. This grave error happens because people do know only one River Meander which today exist. They do not have any knowledge about the other River Meander which run between the lakes upon a time. Upon knowing this reality, all of the placements of the area have to be reviewed. During the two centuries of Seljuk reign, between 1100-1300, the area betweenYalvaç (Alaşehir)-Eğridir (Lâdik); the deep river Meander running between two lakes and Kelbianos Plain, which has shores on both sides of the river was the place where Turkish -Roman and TurkomanMongol battles peaked.
