The Ottoman Press Association: Establishment And Debates In The Press

Abstract

The first initiative for the establishment of a professional association in our press history, the Ottoman Press Association, Cemiyet-i Matbuat-ı Osmaniye, was made in a time, that came with not only a wave of new dailies and magazines in the Ottoman press, but also as a wave of unconventional opinions and writers as well. Made in the first days of the new era, this step indicates the state of mood and the pressure created by the rapid change. The association is a particularly important initiative since it proposed a kind of autocontrol system that prescribed principles for journalists to follow while practizing their profession which aimed both the preservation of free speech and also the prevention of unfavorable consequences that might arise from the abuse of freedom. As a quantitative historical design, the study aims to explore this important initiative in an integrated manner in light of the discussions around the Ottoman press.

Cemiyet-i Matbuat-ı Osmaniye: Kuruluşu ve Basında Tartışmalar

Abstract

Basın tarihimizdeki ilk basın meslek kuruluşu girişimi olan Cemiyeti Matbuat-ı Osmaniye’nintemeli, basının yalnızca yeni gazete ve dergilerle değil alışılmamış bir görüş ve yazar çeşitliliğiylekarşılaştığı bir dönemde atılmıştır. Yeni dönemin ilk günlerinde atılan bu adım, ani değişiminyarattığı ruh halini ve oluşturduğu baskıyı karakterize eder. Cemiyet, hem gazetecilerinmesleklerini icra ederken uymaları gereken kuralları belirlemesi hem de basın özgürlüğünükorurken bu özgürlüklerden kaynaklanabilecek olumsuz sonuçları gidermeyi amaçlayan bir türözdenetim sistemi getirmesi açısından önemli bir girişimdir. Niteliksel tarihsel tasarım karakterinitaşıyan çalışma, Türk basın tarihinde önemli bir yeri olan girişimi, Osmanlı basınındurumuyla ilgili tartışmalar ışığında bütünlüklü olarak incelenmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
