Sociology Associations in Turkey: Continuity behind Discontinuity

Abstract

The first acquaintance of Turks with sociology took place in the 19th century. Auguste Comte paid considerable attention to Turks, seeing them as the bridge between Asia and Europe. Since then sociology has been present sometimes as an idea-oriented and sometimes as a data-oriented or policy-oriented discipline. Le Play and Durkheim have also been influential, while in the 1930s German refugees became prominent; since the 1950s there have been more contacts with US sociology. The journey of sociology in Turkey has been an interrupted one, with six consecutive associations, not all exclusively for sociologists, and its progress has often been involved with political developments in the wider society. The current association, founded in 1990, is described in this article.

Türkiye'deki Sosyoloji Dernekleri: Süreksizliklerin Ardındaki Süreklilik

Abstract

Türklerin sosyolojisi ile tanışması 19. yüzyılda gerçekleşti. Türkleri Asya ve Avrupa arasında bir köprü olarak gören Auguste Comte'un Türklere biçtiği değer büyüktü. O zamandan bu yana sosyolojinin varlığı kimi zaman fikir odaklı, kimi zaman ise veri veya politika odaklı olmuştur. Bu gelişimde hem Le Play, hem de Durkheim etkin rol oynadı. 1930'larda Nazi dönemi baskılarından kaçarak ülkemize sığınan Alman akademisyenler önem kazanırken, 1950'den itibaren Amerikan sosyolojisiyle dirsek teması artmıştır. Türkiye'de sosyolojinin kat ettiği yol kesintili olmuştur. Ardı ardına kurulan altı dernekle beraber sosyolojinin gelişimi sadece sosyologları değil, daha geniş toplumu ilgilendiren politik süreçle yakından ilintilidir. 1990'da kurulan son dernek bu yazının konusunu oluşturmaktadır.
