Agriculture and inflation nexus in Türkiye over a century: Comparative empirical analysis with temporal and sectoral decomposition
Abstract
Purpose: This study explores the dynamic relationship between inflation and the agricultural sector in Türkiye. Unlike other studies, the subject has been examined within three sub-periods considering structural breaks and a 99-year time horizon. In addition, the study examines the effects of inflation on industry, services, agriculture, and general economic growth through a total of 16 models.
Design/Methodology/Approach: Since the variables in the model are stationary at different levels [I(0)-I(1)] and the dependent variable is stationary at the level [I(0)], the A-ARDL bounds test and the Toda-Yamamoto causality procedure were applied.
Findings: Analysis results show a robust cointegration relationship in the 12 models mentioned. In all models, the long-term coefficient values of the inflation variable are negative. The period when the inflation rate was most suppressive on the agricultural sector was the early republican period of 1924-1954. In addition, the agricultural industry exhibited the highest growth among the periods examined, with an average of 5.60% in the same period and continuously decreased in the following periods. The dummy variables highlight the negative repercussions of the 1960 military coup and the economic crises of 1994 and 2001 on Türkiye's overall and sectoral growth trajectory. Empirical evidence indicates that such inflationary pressures constitute a significant structural constraint on the agricultural sector. In addition, the causality findings are consistent with the cointegration test results, indicating that the role of inflation in the Turkish economy varies across sectors. In contrast, its effects on the agricultural sector remain evident.
Originality/Value: The original value of this study lies in its comprehensive coverage of the Republic's history, spanning nearly a century, and its adoption of sectoral and periodic separation techniques.
