Factors influencing producers' decisions to increase medicinal and aromatic plant production areas: The case of Denizli province

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the factors affecting production decisions that are important for the sustainability of medical and aromatic plants.

Design/Methodology/Approach: In this context, it was tried to reveal the factors affecting the sustainability of medical and aromatic plants production by determining the general characteristics of medical and aromatic plants producers and enterprises. General data on enterprises were summarized through tables and indices. Logistic regression was used to determine the factors affecting producers' decisions to increase their medical and aromatic plants production areas.

Findings: It was concluded that the variables of age and non-agricultural income of the producers were statistically significant in affecting the producers' preferences to increase their medical and aromatic plants production areas in case of any decrease in input costs. In case of any decrease in input costs, producers aged 70 years and over are less likely to increase their production areas than producers aged 20-40 years, and producers with non-agricultural income are less likely to increase their production areas than those without. Increase in medical and aromatic plants sales prices Producers aged 70 and over are less likely to increase their production areas than producers aged 20-40, and producers with non-agricultural income are less likely to increase their production areas than those without. When the probability of producers to increase their production areas in case of state support for medical and aromatic plants production activity is evaluated, it is observed that age and non-agricultural income have a negative effect on this probability.

Originality/Value: The results show that increasing cooperation among stakeholders operating in the field of medicinal and aromatic plants, encouraging information sharing, and supporting joint projects will contribute to the development of this sub-sector. Efforts should be made to provide producers with technical information and training opportunities, share innovative agricultural practices, and implement training programs and information sharing initiatives to disseminate best practices in the sector.
