The Veracity of Ammianus Marcellinus’ Description of the Huns

Abstract

The Huns, who were around the Danube River in 376 A.D, had various relations with the Roman Empire for about a hundred years from this date on. So almost all of what we know about the Huns is provided by Roman literature. However, the materials we have about the Huns, a new people for the Romans at this time, is very limited and the reliability of the existing materials are inherently problematic. This was because the Huns were not only new actors on the Roman stage, but also because of the turmoil that resulted when they expelled previously known actors (Goths). This turmoil caused the Romans to suffer a great defeat in Hadrianopolis. A contemporary of such a period, Ammianus Marcellinus, wrote a historical work (Res Gestae) about the misfortunes that befell Rome, under the influence of Greco-Roman classical literature. Ammianus Marcellinus himself stated that he saw the Huns as responsible for all these negativities for the Roman Empire. As a matter of fact, the only surviving narrative about the early periods of the Huns in the periphery of the Roman Empire comes from the work of Ammianus. However, the fact that Ammianus was a contemporary of the period and was unique with his descriptions of the Huns (such as political, social, militarial, religious) caused him to be accepted as a reliable authority by modern historians. However, Ammianus has begun to lose credibility in recent years for the accuracy of his descriptions of the Huns. This study tries to show in three stages that Ammianus was not an authoritative historian in terms of his descriptions of the Huns. First of all, it was emphasized that he did not know their culture enough to be able to define the Huns. Then, the identification of the Huns with the peoples in the classical texts was examined. Finally, the comparison of historical records about similar habits of the Huns with other pastoral nomadic peoples, either their predecessors or successors, has been questioned.

Ammianus Marcellinus’un Hunlara Dair Tasvirinin Doğruluğu

Abstract

376'da Tuna Irmağı civarında bulunan Hunlar bu tarihten itibaren yaklaşık yüz yıl boyunca Roma İmparatorluğu ile çeşitli ilişkilerde bulunmuştu. Dolayısıyla Hunlar hakkında bildiklerimizin neredeyse tamamı Roma literatürü tarafından sağlanmaktır. Ancak bu tarihlerde Romalılar için yeni bir halk olan Hunlar hakkında elimizdeki veriler oldukça sınırlıdır ve mevcut verilerin de güvenilirlikleri, doğası gereği sorunludur. Bunun nedeni Hunların yalnızca Roma sahnesindeki yeni aktörler olmaları değil, aynı zamanda önceden beri bilinen aktörleri (Gotlar) yerlerinden sürmeleri sonucunda oluşan kargaşa ortamıydı. Bu kargaşa ortamı, Romalıların Hadrianopolis’te büyük bir yenilgi almasına yol açmıştı. İşte böyle bir dönemin çağdaşı Ammianus Marcellinus, Roma'nın başına gelen felaketler hakkında Greko-Romen klasik edebiyatın da etkisi altında bir tarih eseri (Res Gestae) yazmıştı. Ammianus Marcellinus, Roma İmparatorluğu için tüm bu olumsuzlukların sorumlusu olarak Hunları gördüğünü bizzat belirtmiştir. Nitekim Roma İmparatorluğu periferisindeki Hunların erken dönemleri hakkındaki günümüze sağlam erişebilen tek anlatı, Ammianus Marcellinus'a eserinden gelmektedir. Bununla birlikte Ammianus Marcellinus'un dönemin bir çağdaşı ve Hunlara dair tanımlamalarıyla (siyasi, sosyal, askeri, dini gibi) biricik olması, modern tarihçiler tarafından güvenilir bir otorite olarak kabul edilmesine neden olmuştur. Ancak Ammianus Marcellinus, Hunlar hakkındaki tasvirlerinin doğruluğu hususunda son yıllarda itibar kaybetmeye başlamıştır. Bu çalışma, Ammianus'un Hunlar hakkındaki tasvirleri nazarında otoriter bir tarihçi olmadığını üç aşamada göstermeye çalışmaktadır. İlk olarak Hunları tanımlayabilecek kadar kültürlerini tanımıyor olması üzerinde durulmuştur. Ardından Hunları, klasik metinlerdeki halklarla özdeşleştirme uygulaması incelenecektir. Son olarak, Hunların selefi ya da halefi diğer sözde göçebe halklarla benzer alışkanlıkları hakkındaki tarihsel kayıtların karşılaştırılması sorgulanmıştır.
