Studies examining the Ottoman-Turkish modernization process from a conceptual and theoretical perspective beyond narrative are few in the Ottoman-Turkish modernization literature. Niyazi Berkes and Şerif Mardin have a distinguished place in the literature with their works combining historical data and theoretical structure. The main axis of Şerif Mardin's perspective on modernization is the concepts of ‘great and little tradition’, ‘culture’ and ‘centralization’. Niyazi Berkes, on the other hand, expresses modernization as secularization and defends the progressive-enlightenment line. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the historical and theoretical perspectives of Niyazi Berkes and Şerif Mardin on the Turkish modernization / modernization process. In addition to the contributions of Berkes and Mardin to the Turkish modernization process, the similarities and differences of both thinkers are emphasized in this context. The perspectives put forward by two social scientists in the historical context provide important reference points in understanding Turkish social transformation.
