The effect of herbivore insects on seed production of dwarf mesquite (Prosopis farcta)

Dwarf mesquite (Prosopis farcta), is a widespread perennial weed species in the bean family (Fabaceae). This study was conducted in Adana province located in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, where the plant is covering a large area and constitutes a major constraint to crop production.  The study was aimed to identify the insect herbivores feeding on dwarf mesquite and their seasonal impact on this weed towards its biological control. Therefore, mature pods were collected from the field margins of three different sites and brought to the laboratory. The seed production and the damage caused by insects were assessed. However, there were significant differences in the mean number of seeds per pod among the three populations. In this study, different insect species representing different insect families were captured feeding inside the pods and seeds. Among these insects, five species were identified and considered potential native biological control agents for mesquite control.

Çeti (Prosopis farcta)’nin tohum üretimine herbivor böceklerin etkisi

Öz

Çeti [Prosopis farcta (Banks & Sol.) J.F.Mac.], Fabaceae familyasına bağlı çok yıllık bir yabancı ot türüdür. Bu çalışma, Türkiye'nin Akdeniz bölgesinde yer alan ve bitkinin büyük bir alanı kaplayarak tarımda önemli bir kısıt oluşturduğu Adana ilinde yürütülmüştür. Çalışma, Çetinin biyolojik mücadelesine yönelik olarak, Çeti meyvesi üzerinde beslenen herbivor böcek türlerinin belirlenmesi ve bu türlerin meyve üzerine etkisinin ortaya konması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Dolayısıyla, Adana ilinde üç farklı lokasyon seçerek, tarla kenarlarından olgun meyveleri toplanıp laboratuvara getirilmiştir. Ardından, bitkinin tohum üretimi ve üzerinde böceklerin etkisi değerlendirilmiştir. Ancak, üç popülasyon arasında meyve başına ortalama tohum sayısında önemli bir fark görülmüştür. Çalışma sonunda, farklı böcek familyalarına bağlı, birçok böcek türü, hem meyve hem de tohum içinde beslerken yakalanmıştır. İncelenen meyvelerin yüzde 50'sinden fazla predatör böcekler tarafından zararlanmıştır. Yakalanan  böcekler arasında beş adet Bruchid türü tespit edilip, Çeti için potansiyel yerli bir biyolojik mücadele etmeni olacağını düşünülmüştür.
