The effect of herbivore insects on seed production of dwarf mesquite (Prosopis farcta)
Öz
Dwarf
mesquite (Prosopis farcta), is a widespread perennial weed species in the bean
family (Fabaceae). This
study was conducted in Adana province located in the Mediterranean region of
Turkey, where the plant is covering a large area and constitutes a major
constraint to crop production. The study
was aimed to identify the insect herbivores feeding on dwarf
mesquite and their seasonal impact on this weed towards its biological control.
Therefore, mature pods were collected from the field margins of three different
sites and brought to the laboratory. The seed production and the damage caused
by insects were assessed. However, there were significant differences in the mean
number of seeds per pod among the three populations. In this study, different
insect species representing different insect families were captured feeding
inside the pods and seeds. Among these insects, five species were identified and
considered potential native biological control agents for mesquite control.
