Abstract

Border tourism in the Web of Science database: A bibliometric analysis with scientific mapping

Year 2025, Issue: 88, 227 - 236, 29.12.2025
https://doi.org/10.17211/tcd.1757770

Abstract

This research examines the issue of borders, which act as geopolitical walls separating countries. Borders are the subject of studies in many fields, including geography, politics, history, and governance. While borders are a multidisciplinary topic, recent research on borders in the field of tourism has been noteworthy. Therefore, this research aims to determine the trends, current status, and characteristics of studies on border tourism indexed by the Web of Science (WoS) from 1995 to 2025 (first half of the year). For analyses conducted using bibliometric methods, a search of the WoS database using the keywords "border tourism" and "cross-border tourism" yielded a total of 194 studies. Parameters such as field, chronology, country/region, authors, institution, publication type, and journal title were applied to the studies using the VOSviewer software program. The data were analyzed using bibliometric analysis. Tables were created using VOSviewer software for the analysis results, and the distribution of publications by country was mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The analysis revealed that, after tourism, research was concentrated primarily in areas such as geography, environmental studies/sciences, economics, management, sustainable green technology sciences, interdisciplinary social sciences, and business. Furthermore, it was determined that publications on border science increased after 2005, with the highest number of publications occurring in 2020.
