Neonatal Tetanos

Year 2008, Volume: 2 Issue: 1, 55 - 63, 01.08.2008

Abstract

Neonatal Tetanus (NT) is a generalized form of tetanus seen in newborns. Since the disease is seen very early after delivery, if the pregnancy and/or delivery is not detected, the infant deaths due to NT can not be notified by the health system. As of 2007, disease is endemic in 47 countries throughout the world and Turkey is one of these countries. In Turkey in 1994, a program for elimination of Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) has been started and the year 2000 has been set as the target for elimination. But, since elimination could not be achieved, the program has been updated and is being carried out with the strategies of Td (tetanos toxoid, adult dose diphteria toxoid)vaccination for women of childbearing age, pregnancy monitoring, promotion of clean deliveries and the strenghtening of surveillance
