CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OFKARACHAY VOCABULARY

Abstract

Karachays belonging to the Kipchak wing of Turkic speaking world, originate from the Caucasus. A larger group of them migrated to Anatolia around the turn of the twentieth century escaping this way from the Russian colonization. Those remaining suffered all „the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” yet were unable to end them. It was not much easier for the immigrants either. In Turkey they settled to Central-Anatolia and were meant to take part in the fighting of the Turkish-Russian war. There are villagers who still remember their old traditions, beliefs, folk-songs and dances. It is possible to find people speaking Karachay even in the towns. However assimilation is inevitable, for the language is not officially taught in schools, they have no writing. Turkish will soon swallow up Karachay in Turkey.
