ON TOFA (KARAGAS) TURKS AND THEIR LANGUAGE

Abstract

Tofa Turks (or Tofas), who live in Nijneudinsk raion and its villages, a part of İrkutsk oblast in Russia Federation in South Siberia today, were known as Karagas and/or Karagas Tatars until 1930. According to the census of 2010, their population is just 762, and their language was included in the Redbook and listed among the endangered language list by UNESCO. The Tofa Turkic, which takes place in the Uighur-Oghuz classification of the Turkic dialects, is significant for comparative Turcology studies as it both preserves the archaic properties and displays some similar properties with those of Mongolian. In the present paper, the socio-cultural history of the Tofa Turks, as well as the phonological and lexical properties of the Tofa Turkic are outlined.
