Adapting Facebook Intensity Scale (FBI) to Turkish: Examination of Factor Structure and Reliability

Abstract

With the increasing use of social media, it is observed that the influence of Facebook on social life is increasing day by day. However, it is noteworthy that there is a limited number of scales for Facebook use.  The aim of this research is adaptation of Facebook Intensity Scale (FIS) to Turkish and examine its factor structure and reliability. For this purpose, data were collected from 362 university students, 267 females and 95 males, consisting of undergraduate and graduate students. The data were collected online via Google forms. The validity of the adapted scale was tested using explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. According to the results of the exploratory factor analysis, the scale consists of only one factor and this single factor explains about 57% of the variance. In addition, confirmatory factor analysis was performed and it was seen that the obtained goodness of fit coefficients was at acceptable level. For reliability analysis, internal consistency (Cronbach α) coefficient was calculated and test-retest reliability was examined. The internal consistency coefficient for the complete scale was found as α = 0.85. The coefficient of correlation for the semi-reliability of the test was found to be .70 in the half-reliability. Based on these findings, it can be said that the FIS is a valid and reliable tool for determining the intensity of Facebook use by young adult individuals and can be used in research designed to determine the intensity of Facebook usage.
