Medical Students’ Decreasing Professional Commitment Across the Educational Continuum: A Warning Sign

Abstract

Aim: Medicine requires lifelong learning and strong professional commitment. Physicians with strong professional commitment deliver better care, while those lacking commitment can cause patient dissatisfaction, increased errors, lower service quality, and burnout. Experience during medical education can significantly influence students’ professional commitment. This study aimed to assess medical students’ commitment to the profession and its relationship with academic life satisfaction. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among students from 1st,4th, and 6th grades at EUFM. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The independent variables in this study aim to examine from the individual to the society level with a multi-layered structure including the individual’s sociodemographic characteristics, well-being, academic conditions and views on the country’s medical environment. Results: Medical students expressing career choice regret were 29%. The mean score for Academic Life Satisfaction scale was 26.48±5.75 and 32.44±7.72 for Medical Faculty Students’ Commitment to the Medical Profession Scale, significantly declining across grades (1st; 34.55, 4th; 32.92, 6th; 29.61; p<0,001). A strong positive correlation was found between commitment to the medical profession and academic life satisfaction (rs=0.541, p<0.001). Of the two satisfaction subdimensions, academic environment showed a stronger correlation than personal satisfaction. Students with poor physical, mental and social well-being and those who passively attend classes have significantly lower commitment scores. Conclusion: The observed decline in professional commitment during medical education is concerning. The strong association between academic satisfaction and professional commitment underscores the importance of addressing factors affecting student well-being and satisfaction to support professional dedication.
