Subject, Socıety, And Power In Michel Foucault: Crıtıcal Contrıbutıons To Contemporary Polıtıcal Thought

Abstract

This study aims to problematize the subject-society-power relationship in Michel Foucault’s thought, centering on his critical contributions to modern political thought and within the context of the “ontology of the present.” The fundamental question of the study is how Foucault transforms the assumptions of the constituting subject, organic or contractual society, and centralized power, which are situated at the core of modern political thought. In this framework, the study discusses how the modern subject and the social sphere are constituted and rendered governable beyond classical narratives of sovereignty, through power-knowledge mechanisms, normalization processes, and rationalities of governmentality. The study treats Foucault’s methodological trajectory, shaped by the concepts of archaeology, genealogy, and problematization, as complementary analytical methods that deepen the analysis of subject, society, and power at different levels. Accordingly, the study argues that in Foucault, the subject is comprehended not as a constituting and transcendental consciousness, but as a position continuously constructed within discursive and power practices; and society is understood not as an organic or contractual totality, but as a dynamic field of “governability” established by power/knowledge relations, dispositifs, security mechanisms, and rationalities of governmentality. Power, on the other hand, is read as a relational and productive mechanism beyond being a property or a “thing” concentrated in the state, while the multi-layered and complex operation of modern power is discussed through the concepts of sovereignty, discipline, biopolitics, and governmentality. The study explains Foucault’s contribution to contemporary political thought through the question of within which knowledge regimes, normative practices, management techniques, and power relations the subject and society are constituted, rather than the question of who holds power. This framework makes visible the trajectory of Foucauldian analytics extending from disciplinary techniques to current debates on governmentality, and points to the critical possibilities it offers for thinking about new forms of power such as algorithmic governmentality.

Michel Foucault’da Özne, Toplum ve İktidar: Çağdaş Siyaset Düşüncesine Eleştirel Katkılar

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Michel Foucault’nun düşüncesinde özne-toplum-iktidar ilişkisini, modern siyaset düşüncesine sunduğu eleştirel katkılar ekseninde ve “şimdinin ontolojisi” bağlamında sorunsallaştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın temel sorusu, Foucault’nun modern siyaset düşüncesinin merkezinde yer alan kurucu özne, organik ya da sözleşmeci toplum ve merkezi iktidar varsayımlarını nasıl dönüştürdüğüdür. Bu çerçevede çalışma, modern öznenin ve toplumsal alanın klasik egemenlik anlatılarının ötesinde, bilgi-iktidar düzenekleri, normalleştirme süreçleri ve yönetimsellik rasyonaliteleri aracılığıyla nasıl kurulup yönetilebilir hale getirildiğini tartışmaktadır. Çalışma, Foucault’nun arkeoloji, soykütük ve problematizasyon kavramlarıyla şekillenen yöntemsel hattını özne, toplum ve iktidar analizini farklı düzeylerde derinleştiren tamamlayıcı analitik yöntemler olarak ele almaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışma, Foucault’da öznenin kurucu ve aşkın bir bilinç olarak değil, söylemsel ve iktidar pratikleri içinde sürekli biçimde inşa edilen bir konum; toplumun da organik ya da sözleşmeci bir bütünlükten ziyade, iktidar/bilgi ilişkileri, dispozitifler, güvenlik mekanizmaları ve yönetimsellik rasyonaliteleri tarafından kurulan dinamik bir “yönetilebilirlik” alanı olarak kavrandığını ileri sürmektedir. İktidar ise devlette yoğunlaşmış bir mülkiyet veya bir “şey” olmanın ötesinde ilişkisel ve üretken bir düzenek olarak okunmakta; egemenlik, disiplin, biyopolitika ve yönetimsellik kavramları üzerinden modern iktidarın çok katmanlı ve karmaşık işleyişi tartışılmaktadır. Çalışma Foucault’nun çağdaş siyasal düşünceye katkısını, iktidarın kimin elinde olduğu sorusundan ziyade özne ve toplumun hangi bilgi rejimleri, normatif pratikler, yönetim teknikleri ve iktidar ilişkileri içinde kurulduğu sorusu üzerinden açıklamaktadır. Bu çerçeve, Foucaultcu analitiğin disipliner tekniklerden güncel yönetimsellik tartışmalarına uzanan hattını görünür kılmakta ve algoritmik yönetimsellik gibi yeni iktidar biçimlerini düşünmek bakımından sunduğu eleştirel imkânlara da işaret etmektedir.
