Investigation of the Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Intercultural Communication and Empathic Tendency Levels in Faculty of Health Sciences Students

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and intercultural communication and empathic tendency levels of the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Material and Methods: The sample of the descriptive and relationship-seeking type research consisted of 772 students studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The data of the study were collected between 16.06.2024-12.07.2024 by using Personal Information Form, Emotional Intelligence Trait Scale, Intercultural Effectiveness Scale and Empathic Tendency Scale. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, frequency, Skewness and Kurtosis (±1) distribution test, t test in independent groups, ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests were used in data analysis. Results: In the study, it was determined that the students' Emotional Intelligence Trait Scale (98.81±19.2), Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (64.07±7.84) and Empathic Tendency Scale total mean scores (67.91±7.75) were above the middle level. It was determined that there was a significant positive relationship between Emotional Intelligence Trait Scale and Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (r=.391; p<.001), a significant positive relationship between Emotional Intelligence Trait Scale and Empathic Tendency Scale (r=.397; p<.001), and a significant positive relationship between Intercultural Effectiveness Scale and Empathic Tendency Scale (r=.387; p<.001). Conclusion: It has been determined that as students' emotional intelligence levels increase, their intercultural communication and empathic tendency levels increase.
