Violence Against Children in the Jewish Bible: Reflections in Contemporary Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Abstract

In the Tanakh, God's violent interventions are frequently encountered, carried out through various methods such as drowning, slaughtering with the sword, burning cities, and commanding the killing of large numbers of people. Some passages in the Tanakh present strong examples of children being taken as spoils of war, enslaved and sold, punished for their fathers' sins, or killed during mass punishments both in times of war and peace. Notable examples include the killing of Egypt's firstborn, the expulsion of Canaanite peoples from the Promised Land, the annihilation of the Amalekites, and events particularly emphasized in the Books of Joshua and Samuel, which bring the killing of children to the forefront. This article examines the tendencies of violence against children in the Tanakh, analyzing collective child deaths from a religious and historical perspective, and will analyze how sacred texts resonate in the context of child deaths in the contemporary Jewish-Palestinian conflict.
