Microfacies Study of the Shanty Falls Reef, Wabash, Indiana

Abstract

Microfacies and statistical study of the Shanty Falls reef, revealed that it consisted of three microfacies, ranging from bioconstructed limestone (extensions of the core) to biocalcarenite (tongue of the fore-reef) and dolosiltite (basin of the inter-reef). The microfacies study allowed subdivision into textural types and permitted differentiation and classification of the uniform limestone sequence. The data derived from microscope are used for correlation of eight field sections, for tracing the evolution of the microfacies parameters, and for the bathymetry.

The statistical measurements of the organic and inorganic parameters in thin section disclosed that the reef system is cut through flank rocks by Wabash River and the core, which stays hidden to the south of the outcrop, is not yet exposed by erosion. The statistical consideration of the crinoids in the core extensions and in the flank rocks showed that the fore-reef sequence is not altogether derived from the destruction of the main core, but growing in situ has received contributions from the talus cones radiating from the central mound.

This microscopic and statistical approach has brought in corrections and refinements to the older megascopic field observations.

Shanty Falls Resifinin (Wabash, Indıana, A.B.D.) Mikrofasies İncelemesi

Abstract

Shanty Falls resifinin mikrofasies ve istatistik usulleriyle incelenmesi, üç mikrofasiesin mevcut olduğunu ve bunların resif çekirdeğine ait iki canlı yapımı kireçtaşı uzantısından resif ilerisi canlı kalkarenit diline ve resif arası havza dolosiltitine doğru bir sıralanma sunduklarını açığa çıkarmıştır. Böylelikle bitevil görünüşlü kireçtaşlarının doku tiplerine ayrılması ve ayırtlanarak sınıflanması mümkün olmuştur. Mikroskop muayenesi ile edinilen veriler sayesinde sekiz saha kesidinin korelâsyonu yapılmış, mikrofasies parametrelerinin evrimi tesbit edilmiş ve batimetri yorumlanmıştır. İnce kesitlerdeki organik olan ve olmıyan parametrelerin istatistik ölçüm ve sayımı, Wabash nehrinin tabiî kesidinin, devamlı yarın güneyinde kalan resif çekirdeğine teğetsel geçtiğini, çekirdeğin henüz aşınma ile açığa çıkmadığını, mostranın çoğunun resif kanadı tabakalarına ait bulunduğunu meydana koymuştur. Çekirdeğin iki uzantısiyle kanat tabakalarındaki Crinoid'lerin istatistik yönünden ele alınması, resif ilerisi tabakalarının tümü ile çekirdeğin tahribinden türemiş olmadığını, yerinde birikmiş organizma kalıntılarına merkezdeki çekirdekten ışınsıyan döküntü konilerinden akıp gelme malzemenin karışmış bulunduğunu öğretmiştir. Böylece bu tarz inceleme, vaktiyle saha müşahedesiyle erişilmiş sonuçlarda düzeltmelere ve inceliklere yol vermiştir.
