USING POPLARS (Populus L.) IN URBAN AFFORESTATION: KAHRAMANMARAŞ SAMPLE
Abstract
Poplars (Populus L.) are trees that are generally short-lived, have low wood resistance, are affected more from storms, can damage to infrastructure with shallow and invader root systems, can produce root suckers, continue their leaf fall for a long period, and are susceptible to insect and fungal attacks. Although their pollens have not more allergic effect, their seeds with cottony hairs psychologically disturb the people and pollute the environment in the spring. In this respect, poplars, although their some positive characteristics, generally are not very suitable plants for urban afforestation. In afforestation made for environmental regulations in the Kahramanmaraş city, it was determined that Asian pyramidal black poplar and some poplar taxa were much used in some parks and gardens. However, in general, it can be said that the poplars had been planted in a limited extent in the city. In urban afforestation in Kahramanmaraş, it should be avoided from using Asian pyramidal black poplar and hybrid poplar taxa, the trees of these taxa should be eliminated with time by cutting them as their stems rot. Trembling poplar, white poplar, grey poplar and Euphrates poplar taxa, which attract attention by aesthetic some leaf and stem bark characteristics and can also make shade, could be used in a limited extent in the city's large parks by taking the necessary maintenance measures.
