Finite element modeling of knot contained beams in bending
Abstract
One of the important factors that affect mechanical behavior of wood is knot that naturally occurs within. Particularly, the size and location of the knots will determine the level of this effect on mechanical behavior. The presence on knots in wood beams that are in bending may change the magnitude of the bending stresses and deformation. In this study, finite element models of the wood beams that contain knots in different shape and location have been generated and bending stress and deformation analysis have been performed. Amount of deformation obtained has been compared with those that are measured in laboratory conditions. Results of the study indicated that finite element models have given very realistic values under the loads applied.
