STORAGE OF ORIENTAL BEECHNUTS (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) AFTER THE PRECHILLING TREATMENT

Year 2009, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 66 - 75, 03.09.2009

Abstract

In this study, the storability of Oriental beechnuts after the prechilling treatment were researched. The beechnuts from three provenances were stored at -6 °C for one year. Significant germination decrease observed in the stored beechnuts after the prechilling treatment. Lengthening of prechilling duration before the storage made the beechnuts more sensitive to desiccation and germination ability of beechnuts dropped greatly. Therefore, the beechnuts to be stored after the prechilling treatment should be prechilled 3-4 weeks less (7-9 weeks) than necessary prehilling duration (10-12 weeks, depending on the provenances). Remaining prechilling duration (3-4 weeks) should be applied after the storage. The moisture content of beechnuts during the storage after the prechilling treatment shouldn't be less than 8 % since the stored beechnuts with 6 % moisture content after the prechilling treatment demonstrated large decrease in the germination percentage.

DOĞU KAYINI (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) TOHUMLARININ KATLAMA İŞLEMİNDEN SONRA SAKLANMASI

Year 2009, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 66 - 75, 03.09.2009
