Evaluation of the Fiber of the Naturally Distributed Typha Species in Turkey in terms of Textile Industry

Abstract

The rapid depletion of natural resources, environmental problems caused by overconsumption, and global warming resulting from greenhouse gas emissions have made sustainable production essential. Due to the environmental impacts and resource shortages caused by the textile industry, the importance of natural fibers has increased. This study addresses environmental issues arising from daily lifestyles and consumption habits, investigating sustainable raw materials and design potentials as possible solutions. In this context, research has begun on fiber production and usage from species belonging to the genus Typha. These naturally growing aquatic plants are widely distributed across the world and require no cultivation intervention. In Turkey, six species occur, with T. latifolia L. being the most common. Studies indicate that Typha fibers have properties similar to cotton and can be used in various fields, including textiles. Further research could enhance sustainable fiber production and contribute significantly to the national economy.
