Investigation of the Relationship Between Eating Attitudes and Sleep Quality in University Students

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between eating attitudes and sleep quality in university students. Method: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted in April 2017 with the students (n=465) studying in the Nursing and Nutrition and Dietetics Department of the Erzincan University Health Sciences Faculty. The data were collected using a descriptive questionnaire, the Eating Attitude Test-40 and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. Additionally the heights and weights of the students were measured. Results: It was detected that 5,6% of the students have eating disorders and 60,4 % of them have poor sleep quality. A very low significant positive correlation was found between the mean Eating Attitude Test-40 score and the mean score of the sleep disorder subscale of the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (p<0.05). Conclusion:In this study, 5.6% of the students had possible eating disorders and more than half of them had a poor sleep quality. For this reason, we recommend that health professionals organize education programs for the students to prevent and cope with the problems of poor sleep and possible eating disorders.
