Earthquake Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from a Family Medicine Perspective

Abstract

Our country is located in the earthquake zone. Throughout history, earthquakes ranging from mild to severe have occurred. As much as the physical damage caused by earthquakes, psychological damage also negatively affects the health of individuals and society.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the psychiatric diseases with the highest prevalence after earthquakes. Differentiating acute stress disorder and other psychiatric diseases observed after the earthquake and providing early diagnosis and treatment is important to protect the health of individuals. The most common psychiatric disorder accompanying PTSD observed after the earthquake is major depression and is associated with an increased risk of suicide. Research shows that the effects of PTSD continue even years after the earthquake.
Family physicians constitute the first point of contact with the healthcare system in accordance with the principles of the discipline. They offer open and unlimited health services to those who want to receive service. They are of critical importance in effectively managing PTSD observed after earthquake trauma. The purpose of this review is to draw attention to the PTSD observed after the earthquake and the critical importance of primary care-focused family physicians in the management of PTSD.

Aile Hekimliği Bakışıyla Depreme Bağlı Travma Sonrası Stres Bozukluğu

Abstract

Ülkemiz deprem kuşağında yer almaktadır. Tarih boyunca etkisi hafiften şiddetliye kadar değişen birçok deprem meydana gelmiştir. Depremlerin yarattığı fiziksel hasarlar kadar psikolojik hasarlar da bireylerin ve toplumun sağlığını olumsuz etkilemektedir. Travma Sonrası Stres Bozukluğu (TSSB), yaşanan depremler sonrası prevalansı en yüksek olan psikiyatrik hastalıklardandır. Deprem sonrası gözlenen akut stres bozukluğu ve diğer psikiyatrik hastalıklardan ayırt edilerek erken teşhis ve tedavinin sağlanması, bireylerin sağlığını korumak için önemlidir. Deprem sonrası gözlenen TSSB’ye en sık eşlik eden psikiyatrik hastalık majör depresyondur ve artmış intihar riski ile ilişkilendirilmektedir. Yapılan araştırmalarda TSSB’nin etkilerinin depremden yıllar sonra dahi devam ettiği gözlenmektedir.
Aile hekimleri disiplinin ilkeleri gereği sağlık sistemi ile ilk temas noktasını oluştururlar. Hizmet almak isteyenlere açık ve sınırsız sağlık hizmeti sunarlar. Deprem travması sonrası gözlenen TSSB’nin etkili yönetilebilmesi konusunda kritik öneme sahiptir. Bu derlemenin amacı deprem sonrası gözlenen TSSB’ye ve birinci basamak odaklı çalışan aile hekimlerinin TSSB’nin yönetimindeki kritik önemine dikkat çekmektir.
