Year 2025, Volume: 19 Issue: 4, 378 - 385
https://doi.org/10.21763/tjfmpc.1634351

Abstract

Introduction
Mediterranean diet is a nutritional model that has maintained its popularity for years with its rich nutritional diversity and positive effects on health. Its protective and preventive effects in many conditions, from obesity to cardiovascular diseases, continue to attract attention worldwide. With the advancement of technology and the increase in digitalization today, YouTube has become an important source of information on nutrition and diet, as in many other subjects. This study aimed to evaluate the quality and reliability of videos on the Mediterranean diet on YouTube.
Method
A search was conducted on YouTube using the keywords “Mediterranean Diet”, “Mediterranean Style Nutrition”, and “Mediterranean Diet Model”, and the first 100 videos were examined. The accuracy, quality, scientific nature, visual and audio quality, and comprehensiveness of the video content were evaluated and compared with the literature.
Findings
The first 100 videos were evaluated by the researchers; 34 videos were excluded because they were shorter than 1 minute or longer than 20 minutes, 12 videos did not contain information about the Mediterranean diet, 1 video was not in Turkish, and 2 videos did not contain verbal narration. A total of 51 videos were included in the study. The average duration of the included videos was determined to be 5.94±3.54 minutes and the average values of the viewing rates were determined to be 17.85±52.78. Among the videos, it was determined that the videos in which doctors and dietitians were speakers were more reliable and of higher quality (p<0.05).
Conclusion
Although YouTube contains highly reliable videos on the Mediterranean diet, it is not a completely accurate and reliable source. Health professionals should be encouraged to contribute more to content production, and access to more accurate, comprehensive, and reliable information should be facilitated.

YouTube’daki Akdeniz Diyeti İçeriklerinin Analizi: Bilimsel Bilgi mi, Yanıltıcı İçerik mi?

Year 2025, Volume: 19 Issue: 4, 378 - 385
https://doi.org/10.21763/tjfmpc.1634351
