Relationships Among Morphological Characteristics of Mycorrhizal Fungi Treated Turkish Oak (Quercus cerris) Seedlings

Abstract

The relationships among morphological characteristics of Turkish Oak (Quercus cerris) seedlings treated with different mycorrhizal fungi were investigated. The study had been carried out in EskiĢehir Forest Nursery in Turkey. Turkish oak seeds which were inoculated with two different mycorrhizal fungi (arbuscular and ectomycorrhiza-arbuscular) and which had not been treated to any treatment (control) were sowed and a hundred seedlings were cultivated for each treatment. In order to determine the morphological characteristics, 30 seedlings from each treatment were randomly sampled and a total of 90 seedlings (3 treatments (2 mycorrhizal mixture and 1 control) x 30 seedlings) were used. The relationship among oak seedlings‟ root collar diameter, shoot height, root length, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, seedling height to root collar diameter ratio, shot to root dry weight ratio, Dickson quality index and dry root percentage were determined in the study. Positive relationships were determined between root collar diameter and shoot height, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, Dickson quality index in both of ectomycorrhizae and ectomycorrhiza-arbuscular mycorrhizae mixture inoculated seedlings. In addition, positive relationships between root collar diameter and shot to root dry weight ratio were formed in the seedlings which had been applied with arbuscular mycorrhizae mixture. The shoot height, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, Dickson quality index increased as the root collar diameter increased and the shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, seedling height to root collar diameter ratio increased as the shoot height increased in all three treatments. The results show that Oak seedlings have generally positive relationships between their root collar diameter and other morphological characteristics and that the values of shoot height, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, Dickson quality index and shot to root dry weight ratio can be reached by using the values of root collar diameter of oak seedlings.
