Reliability and validity of Medical Profession Value Perception Scale and results in medical students
Abstract
Perception of medical profession value pis mainly gained during medical education.
The aim of this study is to develop a Medical Profession Value Perception Scale (MPVS)
and to assess its validity among medical students. Methods:This study carried out on 456 first,
third and sixth year medical students studying at Eskisehir Osmangazi Medical Faculty. MVPS
was created using literature consisting of 23 questions by the researchers, 5-point Likert-type. Item total
correlations, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and test retest correlation were used to assess the reliability
of thescale. Wilcoxon test
wasusedforcomparison of means and Spearman correlation analysis was used for test retest correlation.
Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used for construct validity. Results:
The scale was formed of 18 items and 3 dimensions (attitude of doctors, doctor patient relationship,
doctor's ability to empathize). Scale items explain 49.62% of total
variance and factor loadings ranged from 0.41-0.73. Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was 0.88.
As a result of theconfirmatoryfactoranalysis, the fit of scaleandthe fit indiceswerefoundto be
acceptable. Conclusions: Medical Profession Value Perception Scale is
sufficiently reliable and valid scale according to the analysis results.
