As a result of the questioning of positivism that influences social sciences and sociology, qualitative research methods which aiming to understand and interpret actors in their own context have gained importance. These research practices emphasize different and unique aspects. These are generally divided into five category as etnography, phenomenology, grounded theory, narrative research and case studies. As it is known, these research designes have different processes depending on the topic that researcher focus on and his/her communication and writing ability and/or possibilities. Because they have more flexible structre than quantitative ones, the qualitative designs, in some cases, involve complex processes which are difficult to understand. The aim of this study, so, is to analyze the basic features of phenomenological and etnographic researches, which are two main qualitative designs in sociology, in a comparative way and hope to make a tiny contribution for the researchers. In this review, firstly, the characteristics of qualitative research were mentioned, and then, a short analysis of the effects of phenomenological and etnographic researches on social sciences, their contribution to researchers, their advantages and disadvantages was made.
