Dicotyledonous Weed Seedlings in Winter Crops of Two Subdivisions in Hooghly District, West Bengal, India- A Strategy for Identification and Partial Eco-statistical Analysis

Abstract

The present investigation focused on seedlings of forty-eight dicot weed species within two subdivisions of Hooghly district, considering 18 winter crops. This study improved the skill to identify weeds at their juvenile stages, which is essential for effective weed management strategies. Qualitative and quantitative traits were considered for the construction of artificial key. The quadrat method was employed to calculate species density, frequency, and abundance of studied taxa collected from diverse rural jurisdictions. The Important Value Index (IVI) was computed using the relative values. Quadrat data were analyzed to determine the heterogeneity of seedling vegetation, following Raunkiaer (1934). The artificial key was again strengthened by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), where most of the traits used in the key were positively correlated to the first two principal components. Study of seedling diversity of weeds in winter crops was a novel approach that might generate various other fields of research relevant to weed management.
