COMPETITION AND COMPROMISE in THE WEDDING SQUARE: THE RITUAL OF “KUYAW TALADI” in ESKI IKAN UZBEK TURKS

Abstract

Marriage is celebrated with a wedding, recognized as legitimate by society while institutionally build-ing the foundation of the family. In these celebrations, the testing of the bride, groom, and family in various ways turns into wedding festivities. The küyaw taladı ritual of the Old Ikan Uzbeks of Turkestan, Kazakhstan, is also chaotic, with intersubjective struggles between the groom, the groom's friends, and the bride's twelve aunts. On the other hand, it draws attention as a wedding fight that the participants watch with amusement. This study analyzes the functions, symbolic meanings, and patterned cultural accumulations of the küyaw taladı ritual in social life based on concrete observations and interviews conducted in the field, starting from its status and performance characteristics in the historical process. For this purpose, the study first reveals that this ritual creates a space of competition and consensus within a society based on traditional status. The actions that then develop between the groom, the groom's friends, and the twelve aunts are considered an intersubjective struggle. Finally, as a result of belt-tightening and reconciliation, dressing the groom in new clothes was seen as a demonstration of power and a symbol of approval. As a result of the research, it was determined that this ritual is performed in Turkish culture in the form of punching and beating the groom. It has been determined that this ritual has the function of helping to reinforce the groom's new roles in society as well as entertainment. With the ritual in question, stratified meaning structures that shape the life world of individuals or groups are established on three main axes such as competition-compromise, role transition-assertion, and approval.
