FROM LOST SAINTS TO THE ASSEMBLY OF FORTY, FROM SALMAN AL-FÂRISÎ TO KÖROĞLU: THE HOLISTIC JOURNEY OF SPIRITUAL EVOLUTION IN TURKISH FOLK SUFISM
Abstract
Throughout history, questions concerning the individual’s existence within the universe and the processes connecting life and the afterlife have been examined through diverse approaches in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, theology, anthropology, literature, and folklore. The belief systems that emerge from humanity’s search for meaning—understood as the cumulative responses to these existential questions—have found extensive expression in cultural and literary texts, beginning with mythological narratives. Within Turkish culture, reflections on the individual’s awareness of existence and the path of spiritual perfection (tekâmül) are articulated through a remarkably diverse range of figures, genres, and performative traditions. Spanning from shamans to bards, minstrels to storytellers, myths to epics, folk romances to hagiographic narratives, and from belief systems to ritual practices, this tradition presents a rich and multilayered narrative field. One of the most striking manifestations of this spiritual trajectory, particularly with regard to communication with the sacred and access to sacred knowledge, is embodied in the metaphor of “joining the Forty” (kırklara karışmak). This metaphor is closely associated with a constellation of institutional concepts and figures such as the Abdals (Abdalan-ı Rum), Ashāb al-Ṣuffa, Gürûh-ı Nâci, Rijāl al-Ghayb, Hidden Saints (Kayberenler or Kayıp Erenler), the Corps of Forty, and Khidr. Despite their centrality in Turkish folk Sufism, the processes through which the concept of spiritual perfection becomes institutionalized, the terminological–ritual networks that structure it, and its functionalization within narrative traditions have not yet been sufficiently addressed in the literature from a holistic perspective. This study examines the institutional concepts of the Abdals, the Corps of Forty, Khidr, and Rijāl al-Ghayb—located at the core of the metaphor of “joining the Forty”—through a comparative textual analysis of their representations in pre-Islamic and post-Islamic sources. As case studies, the article focuses on the position of Salman al-Farisi within the Corps of Forty and the Köroğlu narratives, analyzing how the path of spiritual perfection is constructed through differing epistemological frameworks, namely Islamic doctrine and folk Sufi culture. The findings demonstrate that the concept of tekâmül in Turkish folk Sufism crystallizes into a tripartite structure consisting of (1) a numerical threshold (the motif of forty), (2) intermediary figures (Khidr and Salman al-Fârisî etc.), and (3) social reintegration through the hero’s return. The study further reveals that this conceptual network was systematized as a syncretic synthesis in Anatolian Sufi literature between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries and argues for the need to deepen the subject through interdisciplinary and holistic approaches.
