THE IMAGE OF TURKS REFLECTED IN TWO GERMAN FOLK SONGS DEPICTING THE VIENNA SIEGE

Abstract

It's known that Turks frequently take part in the German literature. War between these two cultures has been one of the main elements determining the image of the Turks in Europe. The Turkish songs formed around the German spoken regions, took place in the folkloric literature as the quite lovely kind, especially at the 16 th. and the 17 th centuries. The increase in the number of these songs can be noticed, according to the continuous threat to the Christian society by the Turks. These songs, about the cruelties of the Turks, make the Christian society feel brave and call upon them to fight against the Turks. One of the songs observed under these conditions, is known during the First Vienna surrounding. Another is known during the second one. The image of the Turks was very frightening during the first Vienna surrounding. After the defeat of the Turks at the second Vienna surrounding, frightening image became the object of derision. According to these two exemplary songs, the changed Turkish image will be studied.
